RESPONSIBLE BUDGET COALITION STATEMENT ON THE PASSAGE OF FAIR TAX AMENDMENT THROUGH HOUSE REVENUE AND FINANCE COMMITTEE

Chicago – The Responsible Budget Coalition and its more than 300 member organizations—including Illinois’s leading social service providers, advocates, community groups and labor unions—applaud the House Revenue and Finance Committee for passing the fair tax amendment today. A fair tax will allow for higher rates for higher incomes and lower rates for lower incomes and help Illinois generate the revenue it needs for strong schools, quality services, and thriving communities by helping ensure the wealthy pay their fair share. The measure, which would put the issue of fair tax on the 2020 ballot, now moves to the House floor. We urge every member of the House of Representatives to vote yes to put the amendment on the ballot, because Illinois residents deserve the opportunity to vote on whether they want a fair tax.
