Responsible Budget Coalition: Illinois Senate Shows the Way on Reaching a Budget Agreement

The Responsible Budget Coalition (RBC) commends the courage of Illinois Senate Democrats in passing a year-long budget with substantial new and permanent revenue needed to fund our shared priorities like education, human services, health care and public safety. While regrettably no Senate Republican voted in favor of the budget or the revenues needed to balance the budget, invest in our priorities and pay the bills, it is fair to say that Senate Democrats have attempted to address both parties’ priorities in this budget.

It is now the Illinois House’s turn to produce a budget—a real budget and not another unfunded spending plan. The House should improve on the Senate’s work by raising additional revenue needed to reverse harmful cuts to human services and higher education contained in the Senate budget and to begin paying down our mountain of back bills.

We call on Governor Rauner to sign a fair and fully funded budget without preconditions before the looming May 31 deadline. Illinois' communities are counting on our elected officials to do the right thing.

The Responsible Budget Coalition (RBC) is made up of more than 300 organizations throughout Illinois representing human services, health care, education, labor unions, civic organizations and faith communities. Together, we are calling on Governor Rauner and Illinois lawmakers to pass a responsible budget NOW that raises adequate revenue to fully fund vital services.
