Seniors Abandoned During Budget Impasse

Illinois’ seniors continue to suffer in the absence of a responsible budget.  Senior Services Plus in Alton announced that, due to the lack of state funding, it would have to cut back its Meals on Wheels program that serves 370 seniors by 40%. The budget situation also will put an end to the transportation service provided for seniors to get their medication and go to the doctor. Read more on KMOV.

Senior service agencies around Illinois continue to teeter on the brink of shut down as the impasse continues.  As columnist Phil Kadner reported, Shay Health Care Services of Oak Lawn will have to end its home visiting program that helps 300 area seniors live independently by the end of January.  Describing the impact these services make on her day to day life, Shay client Vera Cassata remarked, “My caregiver treats me like a daughter, like family…and how do you replace someone like that.  I rely on this woman for everything, for my life, really.”  Read the full story at the Chicago Tribune.
